I am really excited about this give-away!! It’s no secret
that at our house we are big fans of Richard and Linda Eyre and their parenting
books. When parenting comes up in conversation, I have a hard time not
bringing them up. So, when my husband stumbled upon a fun resource by them to
help teach the value of the month we definitely wanted to add it to our
library.
Power of Moms gave us the privileged of testing it out and I
am excited to report that we have really enjoyed Alexander’s Amazing Adventures.
They have been a fun reinforcement to our focus on a monthly value.
I wrote in an earlier post here about their book The Entitlement Trap
(which we LOVE) and we have continued as a family to incrementally institute
their principles. I cannot rave enough about their idea of a family economy and
could go on-and-on about how much easier it has made my life as a mom.
Alexander’s Amazing Adventures is a collection of 12 short
stories with music (about a half-hour) emphasizing a different value in each
story. Alexander embarks on adventures to the land of Inland where he meets new
friends and overcomes challenges. The stories act almost as a parable for kids.
As kids think more deeply about the story, they are able to discover the
morals within the entertaining stories.
I really feel that the golden nuggets of this collection are actually the resources that come with the stories. Each lesson comes with a Parent Guide as well
as a Discussion and Activity Guide. Some
values even have a book and movie guide. These guides have really been the key
to making the values stick with my kids. They turn the values from something
the kids just listen to into a family focus that we are constantly reflecting
on.
The starting point for the adventures is honesty and from
there each month has a new value to focus on as follows:
Self-discipline
Love
Fidelity & Chastity
Respect
Courage
Self-Reliance & Potential
Unselfishness & Sensitivity
Loyalty & Dependability
Kindness & Friendliness
Peaceability
Justice & Mercy
I asked my six year old how he liked the stories and he
avidly answered that he liked them and was looking forward to a new Alexander
story. He then repeated word for word his favorite funny line from the story. I
guess you can say they are sinking in!
It's really up to you how you integrate them into your family. We use them at night as the kids go to bed. They are also great for car rides around town. We focus on one value per month and discuss it each week in our family meeting using the guides that come along with the stories.
